Good for you, even better for the environment
MORE ABOUT ORGANIC
Organic food is important to us for several reasons.
Firstly, it is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which can be harmful to both our health and the environment.
Secondly, organic farming practices prioritize soil health, which in turn produces nutrient-dense crops that can benefit our health.
Thirdly, organic farming supports biodiversity and helps preserve the natural ecosystem. Finally, by choosing organic food, we support sustainable agriculture practices and promote the welfare of farmers, workers, and animals involved in the production process.
Organic farming is in a nascent stage in India. About 2.78 million hectare of farmland was under organic cultivation as of March 2020, according to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. This is two per cent of the 140.1 million ha net sown area in our country.
Contaminated Food
The problem of food contamination is prevalent in several countries, India being one of them. To safeguard our health and well-being, it is crucial to make informed food choices and be aware of the potential risks associated with consuming contaminated food.
Farmers are using chemicals to spray their crops, often to control pests and increase crop yield. However, the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers can have negative consequences for the environment, human health, and the quality of the produce. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can harm the health of farmers and farm workers, and also contaminate soil, water sources, and the air. Additionally, these chemicals can persist in the environment, leading to long-term damage to ecosystems and biodiversity.
Organic farming practices, on the other hand, prioritise the use of natural methods to control pests and enhance soil health, resulting in safer and healthier food options.
